EssilorLuxottica relaunches the challenge of flexible work: after more than two years of experimentation, the multinational has signed an agreement with the unions to extend the four-day workweek to an entire Italian production site starting from January 2026.
The plan includes 20 weeks per year with 4 working days, with employees able to enjoy 20 free Fridays without any reduction in salary.
Objective: balance and productivity
According to the company, the short week will promote a better work-life balance, increase the quality and precision of individual work, and bring benefits in terms of efficiency and reduction of energy consumption.
The project aims to enhance the excellence of Made in Italy and the craftsmanship of high-end production.
Incentives and new hi-tech frontiers
The agreement also includes a strengthening of incentives related to quality and performance bonuses, making workers active participants in the industrial strategy.
In parallel, the company and the unions will explore pilot projects for the production in Italy of components for wearable devices and will initiate permanent stabilization paths for workers employed in the new sectors.
Towards a new industrial paradigm
The technical tables between the company and the unions will define methods and timelines by the end of the year.
EssilorLuxottica thus follows the path of other companies, such as Intesa Sanpaolo, which have already introduced the short week, focusing on an increasingly shared principle:
fewer hours, more quality, and more productivity.
