Still few electric cars on Italian roads. In 2024, the share of new battery registrations does not reach 1%, a figure that places Italy in 27th place in Europe, just above Bulgaria. A worrying sign, considering the push towards sustainable mobility that is advancing in the rest of the continent.
European numbers: decline in 2024, but growth in the circulating fleet
According to Eurostat data, in the European Union in 2024, 1.45 million new battery electric cars were registered, 6.1% less than in 2023. Despite the decline, the circulating fleet continued to grow: today there are 5.87 million electric vehicles (+32.4% in just one year).
From the boom of recent years to the recent slowdown
The market share of pure electric cars was below 1% until 2018, then grew steadily: 5.3% in 2020, 9% in 2021, 12.1% in 2022, and 14.6% in 2023. In 2024, the percentage dropped to 13.6%, a sign of a slowdown that mainly affects countries less prepared for the transition.
Incentives coming in September
To revive the sector, the Italian government has announced a new incentive package of about 600 million euros, with the goal of putting at least 39,000 zero-emission vehicles on the road by June 2026. This was confirmed by the Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, who indicated September as the start month of the measure.
