After years of broken promises, bureaucratic stops, and political clashes, the project for the Bridge over the Strait of Messina officially enters the operational phase. The Cipess has given the green light to the final project: the first construction sites will start as early as September and October, with the goal of completing the work by 2033.
Meloni and Salvini celebrate: “Strategic work”
For Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, it is “a fundamental step to connect the country.” The Minister of Infrastructure Matteo Salvini speaks enthusiastically: “It is the first time a project is approved with complete economic coverage and territorial sharing.” The cost? 13.5 billion euros, allocated in the 2024 budget.
An engineering (and media) giant
The bridge will be the longest in the world with a single span: 3.3 kilometers suspended between two 400-meter towers, with six road lanes and two railway tracks. A “Strait subway” for commuters is also planned.
Brussels observes (and evaluates)
The European Union has not yet expressed a definitive verdict. The project is under review for its impact on biodiversity. The Commission is analyzing the documentation submitted by Italy, which includes compensatory measures and reasons of public interest.
The fare? Less than 10 euros for cars
According to the company Stretto di Messina, the base fare for cars will be less than 10 euros, with discounts for frequent travelers. A figure “much lower than the current ferry costs,” they emphasize. But Codacons disagrees: “It is 3,540% more than the average highway network.”
Bridge between development and tensions
M5S, Pd, Avs, NGOs, and unions denounce environmental risks, excessive costs, and devastating impact on the territories. The mayor of Villa San Giovanni is also harsh, fearing “the survival of the city.” The work is seen on one hand as a development driver for the South, on the other as a dangerous gamble. The Cgil calls it a “wrong choice,” while for the Cisl it is a “historic opportunity.” The majority rejoices, evoking the “dream of Berlusconi.” The battle has just begun.
