Tourism represents a fundamental pillar for many European countries, including Italy. In addition to impacting the economy, the sector influences the use of urban and natural spaces, services, and seasonal employment, becoming a key lever for the territories.

Not just holidays abroad

When we talk about tourism, we often think of trips abroad. In reality, the data shows a different picture: tourism also includes day trips and stays within one's own country.

Eurostat numbers

According to 2019 statistics, in the European Union, 61% of tourism spending comes from residents traveling "at home": 42% involves overnight stays of at least one night, and 19% are excursions without overnight stays. Only 39% of tourism spending is generated by foreign visitors, largely related to stays with overnight accommodation (34%), while day visits account for just 5%.

A surprising sector

The widespread idea that tourism is mainly based on foreign flows is not supported by the numbers. Domestic travelers remain the true protagonists, confirming domestic tourism as an essential resource for the European and Italian economy.
