Record-breaking June: Solar power becomes the primary source of electricity in Europe

For the first time in history, solar power surpasses gas and coal. Italy has also achieved an important milestone.

Record-breaking June: Solar Power Becomes the Leading Source of Electricity in Europe

June 2025 delivered an unprecedented result to the European Union: solar energy became the main source of electricity production on the continent. According to data published by the think tank Ember, photovoltaics generated 22.1% of all electricity produced in the 27 EU countries. A historic surpassing of gas (14.4%) and coal (6.1%), symbolizing a paradigm shift in the European energy mix.

Thirteen Countries at the Top: Italy Leading

A total of 13 member states reached a new monthly record for solar production. Leading the way are the Netherlands, where 40.5% of energy came from the sun, and Greece with 35.1%. Italy also achieved an important milestone: 42.6% of the electricity produced in June was solar, surpassing hydroelectric for the first time (stalled at 37.3%). A result that certifies the growing role of photovoltaics in our energy system.

Data Driving Towards a Cleaner Future

The Photovoltaic Alliance welcomed the report with enthusiasm, calling this data “concrete proof that the ecological transition is no longer a vision, but an ongoing process.” The performances of June 2025 demonstrate that investing in solar is not only sustainable but also strategic, especially at a time when Europe is accelerating on the front of energy independence.

The Sun as an Economic and Environmental Ally

The growth of photovoltaics translates not only into fewer emissions and cleaner air but also into economic benefits: more self-produced energy means fewer imports, greater price stability, and new job opportunities.
